It’s funny now to think about the hysteria that followed Scorpion cartoonishly ripping someone’s spine out in the original Mortal Kombat, but as graphical fidelity in games continues to improve, the line between simulated gore and the real thing can get blurry. Some developers embrace those advances—developers on The Callisto Protocol reportedly studied “real-life examples of horror and gore”—but Tripwire Interactive is taking a different sort of approach with the upcoming zombie shooter Killing Floor 3.
Instead of looking at “human injury type stuff” for inspiration, Tripwire Interactive creative director Bryan Wynia told us during a Gamescom interview, Killing Floor 3’s developers are casting back to the action and horror films of the 1980s, when the blood, guts, and…
Read moreFirst reported by TweakTown, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said that the company was not planning on using generative AI technology for its games in a recent investor call. Furukawa’s caution stands in stark contrast to most tech and gaming companies, which are either enthusiastically pursuing generative AI, or leaving the door open to do so in the future.
In response to the fourth question in the investor call transcript, Furukawa said the following (obtained via machine translation and edited for clarity):
“In the game industry, AI-like technology has long been used to control enemy character movements, so I believe that game development and AI technology have always been closely related.
Generative AI, which has been a hot topic recently, can be …
Read moreA few days ago we reported on news that Nvidia and MediaTek are set to release a new Arm-based chip for laptop PCs designed to cash in on the AI boom and compete with everything from traditional Intel and AMD APUs right through to the new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite. Well, now there’s a rumour that Nvidia and MediaTek are also cooking up a chip specifically designed for handheld gaming PCs.
Potentially, this is epic news. There’s absolutely no doubting the Arm instruction set makes for more efficient chips. Some recent leaked data from Dell indicates that its new laptops with the Arm-based Qualcomm X Plus chip will offer nearly double the battery life of their traditional x86 equivalents.
Without a doubt, one of the weakest aspects of current gaming handhelds is poor battery…
Read moreIn a break from his usual sideline of posting pithy excerpts from the Bible (yes, really), Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has been bigging up Panther Lake, a next-gen CPU from Intel based on the company’s upcoming 18A process node.
In a post on X, Gelsinger claims Panther Lake is up and running and has booted operating systems. The Intel CEO also says that it’s slated to go into full production next year. Not a huge amount is known about Panther Lake, architecturally speaking. However, the new 18A process node it uses does bring two critical innovations mentioned by Gelsinger.
“Intel 18A has brought together two critical innovations to enable customers to make leaps in scale and power efficiency: RibbonFET gate-all-around and PowerVia backside power technology – an industry first f…
